President Obama has openly proclaimed his support of gay marriage, but just because the President of the United States says it is normal, doesn’t mean it is. The problem is in the numbers – it usually is. In May 2011, Gallup asked Americans, an open-ended question: Estimate the percentage of homosexual American men and women. Fully a quarter of those interviewed estimated the gay population to be around 21-25%; which mathematically means that out of 1,000 interviewees, 250 of them think there is at least one gay person in every carpool, but a lot of carpool drivers would disagree.
Gary J. Gates, a demographer who studies the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community published an article April 8, 2011 for the Washington Post, titled “Gay people count, so why not count them correctly. He studied 11 large surveys conducted since 2004, seven in the United States and four internationally, and found nearly 9 million Americans self-identify as LGBT. (Thats 3.8% if you are doing the math in your head). That is not a small number, its roughly the entire population of New Jersey. However, it isnt anywhere near 25%.
The number may not have been statistically important in April 2012, but it became very important in May. Now the question is, How will American Christians handle this? In his book, God’s Grace And The Homosexual Next Door, Alan Chambers challenges both groups – gays, and Christians who oppose them.
