CAMEO Supports SBA as Cabinet Position; Says The Full Spectrum of Entrepreneurial Talent Must Be Tapped.

CAMEO, (the California Association for Micro Enterprise Opportunity), applauds President Obamas move on Friday to elevate the head of the Small Business Administration to a cabinet-level position.

According to the Small Business Administration (http://web.sba.gov/faqs/faqIndexAll.cfm?areaid=24) , of all businesses in the U.S. 99.7 percent are small businesses with fewer than 500 employees. The Association for Enterprise Opportunity reports 88 percent are very small businesses with fewer than 5 employees (http://aeoworks.org/images/uploads/pages/US-MEBS-2008%20rev.pdf)

By elevating the head of the SBA to cabinet-level, President Obama recognizes the extreme importance that small and very small businesses hold for the American economy, says Claudia Viek, C.E.O. of CAMEO. Now the next step is to make sure the full spectrum of entrepreneurial talent is tapped from the young tech start-up to the experienced boomer who is becoming her own boss to the taco shop owner who is providing for his family to the long-term unemployed who has turned business owner.

According to the Kauffman Foundation and other research, start-ups of all types are the job creators. A shift is needed to move from old methods that may have worked for a different economy to a new innovative, creative and flexible method that will work for todays economy and support these locally grown and start-up businesses. The SBA cabinet position has the power to make sure that our new economy supports the entire range of entrepreneurs.
