There is little doubt that American schools are failing in their duty to provide adequate education to our nations youth.
It was this fact that led U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to tell representatives of the National Newspaper Publishers Association on March 14 that he and President Obama agree that schools must be accountable for the needs and performance of all students.
Over the past several weeks, New Jersey, Illinois, North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee have joined introducing legislation or taking drastic measures in an attempt to remedy failing schools. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie just announced the takeover of the Camden Central School District because of its dismal academic record. Chicago has sparked massive protests with its planned closure of 54 schools in an attempt to solve the problem. North Carolina and Kentucky have introduced or passed legislation to raise the school dropout age. In Tennessee a bill was recently introduced that would lower a familys welfare benefits by 30 percent if their children fall behind in school.
There has been no lack of educational theories paradigms and projects over the past 40 years. What has been lacking is consistent and uniform results.
