Hamden Elementary Schools Awarded HealthierUS School Challenge Bronze Level Distinction

Islandia, NY (PRWEB) April 20, 2013

The USDA established the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) to recognize schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that create healthier school environments by providing nutrition education, nutritious food and beverage choices, physical education and opportunities for physical activity. This initiative is a main component in First Lady Michelle Obamas Lets Move! campaign, an effort to end the childhood obesity epidemic.

This April, eight Hamden elementary schools were awarded the HUSSC Bronze Level distinction: Bear Path School, Church Street School, Dunbar Hill School, Helen Street School, Ridge Hill School, Shepherd Glen School, Spring Glen School and West Woods School.

This recognition is the product of a joint effort between Hamden Public Schools and Whitsons School Nutrition, food service providers at Hamden Public Schools. Karen Gersbeck, Assistant District Manager and Jeanne Cooper, Director of Athletics, were the main drivers of this initiative along with a review team composed of a cross section of the Hamden school community: members of the Parent-Teacher Association, teachers, principal and administrators.

In order to qualify for the Bronze award, the elementary schools had to demonstrate the school meets all the HUSSC nutritional requirements on an on-going basis, serving a variety of healthier food that appeal to the students, planning meals that emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products; and that include lean proteins and foods low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars. Furthermore, the school was required to prove its compliance with the physical activity criteria of the HUSSC according to age group.

With this award, Hamden Public Schools reiterates its commitment to promoting a healthy school environment for its students. According to Fran Rabinowitz, Superintendent of Hamden Public Schools, We are very pleased to be receiving this award. Whitsons and the school system have worked very hard to ensure that all of our students have healthy choices for breakfast and lunch each and every day. Whitsons has been a wonderful partner in making this happen and I am especially grateful to Jeanne Cooper and Karen Gersbeck.

The award ceremony will take place on April 26th. A representative from the USDA will present a HealthierUS Bronze School banner, a commemorative plaque and a check for $ 500 to the schools.

HistoWiki.com’s Clint Evans Announces Kindle Book Giveaway Which Shows the Missing Links from Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” Weight Loss Program

Austin, Texas (PRWEB) December 20, 2012

Michelle Obama’s “Lets Move” program is a great first step and shines a bright light on an overwhelming problem. By 2030, according to Reuters, 50% of Americans will be Obese (article title: “Fat and getting fatter: U.S. obesity rates to soar by 2030″). HistoWiki.com curator Clint Evans and his co-author “E. Calvin Barber II say in their new Kindle book, “Get Down to 150,” reversing the obesity epidemic and trend is about more than just moving around. Nutrition is 80% to 85% of the battle.

As noted at the HistoWiki “History of Obesity page, Obesity costs the average man an extra $ 2,646 per year and the average woman an extra $ 4,879 on average. According to a 2010 study, direct obesity related medical expenses in America are $ 160 billion per year. The estimated indirect costs? $ 450 billion.

And while being overweight can be a financial problem, what stops most people making lifestyle changes promoted by the “Let’s Move” program can be indulging cravings instead of actual hunger. Evans says “Calvin and my overriding philosophy is to use healthy, whole natural foods to satisfy hunger. It’s not about diets because many studies have proven diets don’t work (according to WebMD article: “Diets Don’t Work Long-Term”). Instead, it’s about satisfying those cravings that often derail so many diets and cause the phenomenon of “Yo-Yo dieting”.

To help those grappling with obesity, Evans and Barber are unveiling a limited 1 day “book promotion is a Christmas gift for the Kindle book “Get Down to 150″.

“It’s our way of giving an early Christmas present to overweight and obese sufferers everywhere. There are lots of reasons why people are overweight. We don’t shy away from controversial topics like whether dairy is the right way to go for weight loss or bone thinning issues. The reasons why, what happens by staying in the same behavior and what happens by making a healthy shift, as well as the how-to lose weight are covered in the book,” says Evans. The authors are hoping to tap into that spirit of Christmas to give away a day’s worth of copies.

HistoWiki.com’s mission is to the leading social media curation forum for innovative content leaders examine and archive their topics of expertise and passionate interests. A Solution for a Healthier Future – Integrating Physical Activity for Kids into the School Curriculum

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) June 08, 2012

One Million Solutions in Health reveals the first video to be launched in its efforts to reach one million solutions to improve the worldwide healthcare system.

The first solution targets obesity and obesity-related illnesses, which are being stated as one of the most prominent factors that affect the physical and emotional health of todays generation. The key to this issue will depend on how school curricula incorporate physical activity for kids and other related programs. However, the main challenge to this will be assimilating these activities in a way that kids remain motivated and willing, and continue to feel enthusiastic throughout the whole process.

President Obama, in his State of the Union address, stated: if we want to win the futurethen we also have to win the race to educate our kids. And if we intend to win that race, we must ensure that no kid should have to try to learn on an empty stomach, but has access to the healthiest, most nutritious food we can provide, plus physical activity they need for a healthy lifestyle and a healthy future.

With the Lets Move – Eat Healthy initiative by the First Lady Michelle Obama, the primary focus of eating healthy has garnered lots of attention in the past few years. Yet, providing sufficient physical activity for kids within the school hours and subsequently later, at home, seems much more difficult than anticipated due to the ever-changing and luxurious lifestyles.

According to a national survey in 2005, when looking at physical activity for kids, only 27.8% of girls, and 43.8% of boys, in high school had at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Hence, there has to be a solution where schools can offer the right permissive environment that leads to appropriate levels of physical activity for kids, and healthy living. One such solution can be found in the accompanying video.

The video reiterates the fact that if children (and their parents) have to be be more physically active and healthy, there has to be more focus on expanding the physical activity for kids through physical education and activity programs, and realigning the goals. There has to be a shift in understanding what children think, how they feel about themselves in relation to their health, and then offer them the choice of a physical activity that is to their liking. It all comes down to skilling students to be active and thereby activating their state of mind, as described by Costa and Garmston in their studies titled, Maturing outcomes – New Horizons for Learning, at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education.

Healthy eating patterns learned in childhood and adolescence promote optimal childhood health, growth, and intellectual development. With reference to this, schools should provide an environment that works with children’s natural desire to play and move, as well as a place where we can ensure that every child is provided with the possibility of a coordinated and sequentially developed health and activity program, commented Nehal Kothari, an associate with One Million Solutions in Health.

Combining this environment with cognitive tools that connect life choices to the active and healthy well-being of a family, and hence, a community, may seem a little ambitious at first. However, amalgamating life skills into physical activity for kids will yield a sense of healthy living and well-being, motivated by personal choice.

One Million Solutions in Health thrives on views like these to provide solutions and ideas that help to change the healthcare environment. Feel free to share comments, ideas or opinions by mailing it to info(at)onemillionsolutionsinhealth(dot)org or posting on the blog at http://www.onemillionsolutionsinhealth.org/1-million-solutions/physical-activity-for-kids/. Obama’s Childhood: Birth of the Antichrist Man Child

With Obama visiting Indonesia today, the New York Times has a story that is just chock-full of interesting tidbits about Obama’s time living there as a child in the late 1960s. For example, the Times reports that back then Obama was “chubby” and that some of the locals referred to him as “the boy who runs like a duck.” www.nytimes.com Then, of course, there’s this: His nanny was an openly gay man who, in keeping with Indonesia’s relaxed attitudes toward homosexuality, carried on an affair with a local butcher, longtime residents said. The nanny later joined a group of transvestites called Fantastic Dolls, who, like the many transvestites who remain fixtures of Jakarta’s streetscape, entertained people by dancing and playing volleyball.
